The motif of the path was popular in Russian Symbolist art. Pavel Naumov’s enigmatic and religiously tinged painting is an excellent example of the esoteric and individual images created in the early twentieth century. Such works are reminiscent of dreams of fortresses in Burgundy or cities in the Holy Land, memories of holy women and meetings full of profound meaning and fatal consequences. The pure, ringing tones and laconic forms of these vision-like pictures were inspired by medieval carpets, miniatures and, possibly, the Duc de Berry’s Les Tres Riches Heures.
