Like many other works by Alexei Savrasov, this simple village landscape acquires profound meaning with the help of the motif of a road – the leading element in the composition. The way in which the texture of the earth is conveyed plays an important role in the image. The road leads to a village – the very heart of human existence – descending down a hillock and continuing up to a rainbow, lending a joyous mood to the whole canvas.
