Exhibition «Georg Christoph Grooth and the Time of Elizaveta Petrovna»

The third exhibition from the «Saga of the Dynasty» series dedicated to the reign of Elizabeth (Elizaveta Petrovna) was open in St.Michael’s Castle. The basis of the exhibition consists of works by Georg Christoph Grooth (1716-1749) - one of the most prominent representatives of «Rossica» whose 300th Anniversary is celebrated in 2016.

On the one hand, epoch of empress Elizabeth is one of the periods of Russian history that are usually estimated as controversial. On the other hand, it was the golden age of Russian culture and rich development of architecture, painting, graphic arts as well as art collecting, initiated by Peter the Great and continued by his daughter Elizaveta. The exhibition in St. Michael’s Castle presents more than 150 art pieces by various artists who worked during the time of her magnificent reign. The core part of the exhibition is formed from the works by Georg Christoph Grooth.

Georg Christoph Grooth has become the founder of the Russian portrait school of the Modernity. He has considerably influenced the formation of the leading Russian painters such as Aleksei Antropov, Dmitry Levitsky, Fyodor Rokotov. The exhibition will comprise around 150 works of art from the collection of the Russian Museum and several other museums of Russia; among the works on display there are 40 paintings by Russian and foreign artists, over 50 graphic pieces and around 60 objects is applied art. 

The exhibition is organized with participation of the State Hermitage Museum, State Tretyakov Gallery, State Historical Museum, Moscow Kremlin Museums, St. Petersburg State Museum of Theatre and Music, Russian Academy of Sciences Library, Museum of the History of St. Petersburg, The State Peterhof Museum Reserve, The State museum «Pavlovsk», Tsarskoe Selo State Museum-Preserve, The State museum-preserve «Gatchina», The State Museum of Fine Arts of Tatarstan Republic, Nizhny Novgorod State Art Museum, Orel State Museum of the Fine Arts, Tallinn City Museum, Art Museum of Estonia, Narva Museum and private collections.

The new film «Georg Christoph Grooth and the Time of Elizaveta Petrovna» is broadcasting at the exhibition in two parts (duration: 33 min.) The film is unique for showing of detailed showing of restoration of the 18th century portraits which is  a genuine museum school.

The exhibition is organised with the support of the Charitable Foundation «Sistema».
