Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky is a world-famous Russian marine painter and one of the most successful Russian painters of the XIXth century. His works are extremely popular with the viewers and also are considered as real decoration of the museum collections in Russia and all over the world. In the collection of the Russian Museum there are 54 works of Aivazovsky. The exposition in the Benois Wing unites paintings from the Peterhof State Museum Reserve, Tsarskoe Selo State Museum-Preserve, St. Petersburg Central Naval Museum, St. Petersburg Naval Cadet Corps. The exhibition includes about 200 pieces and a special part of it will present memorial materials, as well as photographic ones, which could show the iconography of Aivazovsky. The core part of the exposition includes world-renown masterpieces as well as less known works of Aivazovsky from the private collections, surrounded by objects that reflect the entourage of Aivazovsky’s creative activity on the post of the painter of Russian Naval General Staff. The exhibition opening in December 2016 takes up major exhibition space of the Benois Wing. The structure and content of the exhibition, its design and conceptual emphasis considerably differs from the State Tretyakov Gallery exhibition dedicated to Ivan Aivazovsky.
