Sculptor. Originally a serf. Studied in St Petersburg at the School of Drawing, Society for the Encouragement of Artists, and at the David Iensen studio, who helped him to get his freedom (1860). Occasional student at the Imperial Academy of Arts; non-class artist (1864), class artist of the second degree (1869) and of the first degree (1870). Academician for the statue Peter I (1872). Contributed to creating monuments designed by Mikhail Mikeshin: Millennium of Russia monument in Novgorod (1862), a monument to Catherine II in St Petersburg (1873) and a monument to Alexei Greig (1873, not preserved). Designed many monuments, including the monument to Alexander Pushkin in Moscow (1880), in St Petersburg (1884) and Kishinev (1855). Full member of the Imperial Academy of Arts (from 1884).
