Tabernacle from the Kronstadt Naval Cathedral

Early 20th century

The tabernacle comes from the Kronstadt Naval Cathedral of St Nicholas, built according to a design by Vasily Kosyakov from 1903–1913 in an imitation of Byzantine basilicas. The tabernacle, created in the early 20th century, was designed to resemble a miniature domed ancient temple. In its artistic characteristics, you can find the hallmark features of Art Nouveau: an elongated shape, laconic ornamentation, the predominance of smooth surfaces, which serve as a foil to the beauty of the rare additions among the design elements.
