The national-romantic trend in architecture and painting, known as “Russian style”, enjoyed the special patronage of Alexander III. Decorative and applied art, chiefly furniture, was especially influenced by this style, which turned to motifs of peasant carving and embroidery. At the St Petersburg International Manufacturing Exhibition in 1870, the original oak armchair Shaft Bow, Axe and Gloves, the artist of which was the carver Vasily Shutov. The emperor liked this curious work very much, and it became widely famous and many copies were sold.
