Room in a Hotel. Zagorsk

1946

  • oil on canvas. 128 x 98
  • Ж-8509

  • Received in 1969 via the Ministry of Culture of the USSR

The work was painted after the end of the war, when anti-religious propaganda was still widespread in the USSR, though many people, from simple folk to members of the intelligentsia, simply ignored it. Opening up from the window of a hotel room in Zagorsk is a view onto Dormition Cathedral of St Sergius Trinity Monastery. The resolution of a purely pictorial task — the combination of a landscape and a still life — becomes a reflection on the coexistence of two sides of life: the secular world and religious traditions.
