The objects of the stilI-Iife reflect the difficult times in which it was painted. Bread, potatoes and herring were the main diet of citizens during the years of war and revolution in Petrograd. Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin depicts each of these objects carefully and solemnly, aspiring to lend them monumentality and beauty. The potatoes seem particularly heavy and material on the pink background, setting off the dark tones of the bread. The herring scales burn and shimmer like precious stones in the rays of light.
