Marc Chagall depicted both the streets of Vitebsk and life inside its houses. Shop in Vitebsk was painted shortly after the artist’s return from Paris. Chagall depicts the familiar world of the grocery store, with its barrels of herring, oats, sugar cubes, flour and a range of other items. The artist’s calm, loving gaze transforms everyday objects into this poetic image of a shop.
