Painted with clean, light colours, full of inner dynamics, the work of Konstantin Yuon conveys the tender charm of an ancient Russian town that awakens to life with the first rays of the spring sun.
The Assumption Cathedral of the Trinity-Lavra of St. Sergius, depicted by Yuon, was built in 1559–1585 on the means of Ivan the Terrible, who wished to place a cathedral in the monastery on the model of the main Moscow Kremlin cathedral. The monastery architects built a solemn and strict cathedral full of majestic calmness and almost precisely replicated the forms of the Kremlin Assumption Cathedral. Its impressive volume, crowned with five closely set domes, became the main dominant of the entire monastic complex. In 1806, the domes gained spectacular ornaments in the form of gold stars of different sizes.
