Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin. On the 140th Anniversary of the Artist’s Birth

Today, it goes without saying that Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin was a genius of the 20th century and his impact on culture is commensurate to that of such prominent masters as Kazimir Malevich, Pavel Filonov, and Wassily Kandinsky. The exhibition in the Benois Wing will present the artist’s milestone works, encompassing his entire career, from well-known masterpieces to forgotten ones, from those held in state museums to those owned by private collectors. For the first time ever, Petrov-Vodkin’s paintings will be accompanied by studies and sketches that allow recreating the process of the works’ creation.

The exhibition will include over 250 works of painting and graphic art from the collection of the State Russian Museum, State Tretyakov Gallery, Radishchev State Art Museum in Saratov, Khvalynsk Art Museum, St. Petersburg Theater Museum, St. Petersburg Bolshoi Drama Theater Museum, A. A. Bakhrushin State Central Theatre Museum in Moscow, State Hermitage, regional art museums, and private collections of St. Petersburg and Moscow. The exhibition will feature such masterpieces as Bathing of the Red Horse (1912), The Mother of God, Softener of Evil Hearts (1914–1915), Petrograd Madonna (1920), Death of a Commissar (1928), Alarm (1934), and others.
