At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, residents of the Kadnikov’s district of the Vologda province wore old peasant clothing: shirts with decorated hems, skirts sewn from wide strips of patterned fabrics and peculiar lace. Kadnikov’s lace had a large, clear pattern. On the simple lattice background, large rhombuses alternate with openwork filling and rare motifs of peahen birds with raised wings, branching trees. There is also a motif of the two-headed eagle, popular as well in other forms of folk art. The lace was made of thick linen thread, with relief strips of white paper or coloured woolen thread.
