The Banner of Peace symbol was proposed by Nicholas Roerich to represent the International Treaty on the Protection of Artistic and Scientific Institutions and Historic Monuments (Roerich Pact, 1935).
"... the proposed banner" writes Roerich, "is a symbol of the whole World - not just one country, but the entire civilized World. The banner proposed depicts, on a white background, three connected amaranth Spheres within a circle, a symbol of Eternity and Unity. Although we do not know when exactly this Banner will fly over all cultural monuments, there is no doubt that the seed has sprouted. It has already attracted the attention of the great intellects and is spreading from heart to heart, reawakening the ideas of Peace and Goodwill among the masses of people".
