The Mari people (self‑designations: Mari, Mari, Mary; the outdated Russian name is Cheremis) are a Finno‑Ugric people in Russia, the indigenous population of the Republic of Mari El. They also live in the north‑west of Bashkiria, the Kirov Region, the south‑west of the Sverdlovsk Region, and other regions.
