Signboards are not, strictly speaking, works of folk art. They are the individual creations of urban painters, whose scope was regulated by their guilds and the official censor — a far cry from the creative canons of folk art. Their painterly merits were nevertheless an important influence on the artists of the Russian avant-garde, who highly rated the originality of the signboard.
