Traditionally, the person depicted is considered to be Vasily Perovsky, although researchers have not reached a final attributional conclusion. Vasily Alexeevich Perovsky (1795–1857): Illegitimate son of Count Alexei Razumovsky. Studied at Moscow University and then served in the military Fought in the Patriotic War (1812) and the Russo-Turkish War (1828–1829). Lieutenant general (from 1833), cavalry general, adjutant general. From 1833 to 1842, he was the Orenburg military governor, and the governor-general of the Orenburg and Samara regions. He was made a count in 1855.
