Collection history
The Russian Museum’s painting collection is one of the world’s largest collections of Russian art. Today it comprises around 15,000 works dating from the eighteenth to the twentieth century. Its core was formed by works transferred to the museum from the Hermitage, the Academy of Arts, and the imperial palaces. By the time the museum opened in 1898, the collection already included around 400 paintings, among them works by Karl Bryullov, Ivan Aivazovsky, Alexey Venetsianov, Orest Kiprensky, Ilya Repin, Vasily Surikov, and other major artists.
During the twentieth century, the collection expanded considerably through private collections, museum holdings, exchanges, and targeted acquisitions. Russian avant-garde, Soviet painting, and art of the second half of the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries occupy a particularly important place in the collection. It represents virtually all of the major movements and artistic schools, from the academic and realist traditions to Suprematism, Constructivism, Socialist Realism, the Severe Style, and underground art.

Kazimir Malevich was the founder of the artistic and philosophical school of Suprematism. His outstanding ideas about forms and meanings in art would eventually constitute the theoretical underpinnings of non-objective, or abstract, art. Malevich worked in a variety of styles, but his most important and famous works concentrated on the exploration of pure geometric forms (squares, triangles, and circles). His philosophical theory of the new type of artist was ruined by soviet reality.

The Program includes works of artists from the collections of two museums - The Russian Museum and the Museum of Republic of Karelia, dedicated to "Kalevala". It includes annotations of the works and biographies of artists.
