Portrait of Grand Duke Alexander Pavlovich in Childhood

Grand Duke Alexander Pavlovich, eldest son of Grand Duke Pavel Pavlovich and Maria Fyodorovna, grandson of Catherine the Great. Born 12 December 1777, ruled as Emperor Alexander (1801-1825). The one-year-old prince is shown sitting on a pillow wearing a dress. In the eighteenth century small boys and girls wore the same clothes. On the pillow we can   also see a blue ribbon and the cross of St Andrew, the highest Russian decoration, which was bestowed on male members of the royal family when they were baptised. The boy is holding his first musical instrument - a rattle. He later developed an interest in music and sometimes even played the violin in public. Play and Passion in Russian Fine Art.
