The Grand Duke Paul Petrovich was the son of Empress Catherine the Great and Emperor Peter III. Paul I reigned as Emperor of Russia between 1796 and 1801.
In 1798 he was elected the Grand Master of the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta. He was murdered on 11 of March 1801 by conspirators during a palace coup. He was called “the Russian Hamlet” as he is one of the tragic figures who reigned in Russia.
Paul I is depicted with the orders of St Andrew (the ribbon and the star) and St Anna (the cross).
