By the size and composition the painting was conceived as a pair to the landscape "View of Sorrento, near Naples" ("with the house of Torquato Tasso"). If we assume that the painting was part of the "collection" of landscapes, commissioned by the grand duchess Elena Pavlovna in the beginning of 1829, but not finished by the artist, it can presumably be dated 1829–1830.
Amalfi is a coastal city on the beautiful Gulf of Salerno in the Italian province of Salerno, the seat of the Archbishop and the capital of the medieval Maritime Republic. It was founded in the 4th century by Constantine the Great.
