Mohammed, or Muhammad, (circa 570–632) is revered as the Prophet in Islam. After receiving a revelation from Allah – the Koran – he became a preacher of the new faith. Roerich’s painting is devoted to Mohammed’s vision. According to legend this took place on Mount Hira, near Mecca, where the Angel Jibreel (Gabriel) appeared to him.
