Vasily Ivanovich Surikov (1848–1916), historical painter, portraitist and landscapist. He studied in Krasnoyarsk under the artist N. Grebnev, at the Drawing School of the Society for the Encouragement of Artists (1869) and at the Imperial Academy of Arts (1869–1875, 1873 under Pavel Chistyakov). He was an active member of the Imperial Academy of Arts (from 1893), and an Academic (from 1895). He was a member of the Society of Travelling Art Exhibitions (from 1881) and the Union of Russian Artists and took part in exhibitions from 1870. He systematically completed trips to Siberia and spent time on the Don (1893) and the Volga (1901–1903). He also visited Germany, France, Austria (1883–1884), Switzerland (1897), Italy (1900) and Spain (1910).
