Kokoshnik

Kostroma Gubernia. Last third of the 18th century

The pride of the headdress collection are its unique Kostroma kokoshniks — tall and ornamented with finely gathered silk ribbons and gold fringe, the latter hanging over the forehead in place of the usual podniz of pearls. The kokoshniks are topped by fine pleats spreading out in fan-like fashion. These methods are also characteristic for 18th-century shugais and dushegreyas.
