The idea for the painting came to Vasnetsov during a trip to France after he had retired. The choice of subject is no coincidence. The street performance reminded him of traditional festivities held in the country back home in Vyatka Province. He was attracted by the scale and colour of the French festival. The main hero of the picture, Pierrot, is the centrepiece of the composition. The spectators, although expressing very individual emotions, nevertheless share a general feeling of participation in the performance. Play and Passion in Russian Fine Art. St-Petersburg. 1999.
