The Pediment of Maximovs house

The village of Valki, The Balakhna District, The Nizhny Novgorod Province. 1888

Pediments, window frames, multi meter friezes gave the artists an opportunity to fulfill their artistic ability. They adorned the pediment with fabulous flowers and curls of acanthus. One can see good-natured lions with human faces, Sirin birds, mermaid-bereginis, dragons, and snakes. In the Volga carvings, these originally popular poetic images merged into a unique combination with motifs and forms of urban classical architecture. A typical example of creativity of local carvers is the mighty pediment of the Maximovs house from the village of Valk in the Lyskovsky district of the Nizhny Novgorod region.
