A ladle with two handles (skopkar)

Permogorye, Solvychegodsky district, Vologda province. 19th century


Painted two handled ladles in the form of the majestic floating birds are the earliest piece of Permogorsk painting in the museum’s collection. Fancy floral shoots tangle the walls of the ladle. Large geometric rosettes on the chest give monumentally solemn and at the same time symbolic character to the decoration. Rosettes in the form of a circle or a rhombus on the ladle are the solar signs, the remnants of an ancient pagan symbols, preserved on this ritual utensils.
