Kazan Gubernia was a major center for the manufacture of footwear. Both Russian and Tatar shoemakers worked in Kazan, and their production was sold in Russia’s major trade fairs. Men’s, women’s and children’s shoes and boots were sewn of soft, thinly-dressed, colored goatskin. A type of closed-seam stitching resembling leather appliquѐ work was widespread in Russia and widely adopted by Torzhok shoemakers as well.
