In 1935–1936, Boris Ermolayev created a series of genre scenes depicting everyday life in Leningrad. He meticulously documents the less grand parts of the city and their usual denizens. This cycle of paintings was based on the many sketches made by the artist as he wandered the winding streets of his native town. The atmosphere exuded by his small paintings is exact, but at the same time in a class by itself. They are also endowed with the artist’s own presence, quietly and lovingly chronicling the various subjects and characters.
