Povoinik

Arkhangelsk Gubernia. 19th century

The northern povoinik is a hat with a soft, plain band and a velvet or silk base. The top is embroidered with gold thread or beads. This headdress was worn with a kustyshki kerchief, tied in its particular way. The incredible rich art of gold embroidery, on headdress and other items of the costume, was developed in the Solvychegodsk Village in Vologda Gubernia. There were large gold embroidery workshops at the estate of the rich Stroganov merchants in Solvychegodsk in the 16th and 17th centuries. Stroganov embroidery is noted for its extraordinary fine technique. The traditions of this art were preserved by Solvychegodsk and Shenkur embroiders up until the early 20th century.
