Nikolai Suetin was not only close ally of Kazimir Malevich but also according to Anna Leporskaya “the only apprentice of Malevich”.
The deep comprehension of the suprematism theory and practical analysis of Malevich's works helped Suetin to avoid a superficial imitation including the use of a number of simple geometrical forms and escape from involuntary stylisation that tempted the less experienced artists.
It was Suetin who designed the most successful pieces of the legendary decoration of Vitebsk in 1920-1921 – designs for rostrums, sketches for murals and trams, designs for signs. The feeling of harmony and rhythm let the artist with the exquisite artistry make the compositions using a circle, square and coloured rectangular stripes - the famous suprematism set and Suetin always achieved new and dynamic interpretation.
