Kovalevsky Pavel Osipovich
1843, Kazan – 1903, Saint Petersburg
Painter; author of genre, battle paintings, illustrator. He studied at the Academy of Arts (1863 –1871) under the tutelage of B.P. Villevalde. Gold medal (1869) for the painting "Persecution of Turkish Foragers by Cossacks", a major gold medal (1871) for the painting "First Day of the Battle of Leipzig in 1813". Scholar of the Academy in Munich, Vienna, Rome, Paris (1873–1876). During the Russo-Turkish war of 1877–1878 was in the army as a military artist with Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich. Participant of the academic and world exhibitions in Paris (1878, gold medal), Munich and Berlin. Gave lessons (1897–1903), led the workshop of battle painting. Academician (1876), professor (1881), full member of the Academy of Arts (1898).
