A Pot

The Borovichsky District, the Novgorod Region. 1937

The external simplicity and modesty of folk ceramics are combined with the amazing plasticity of the forms, which are always proportional. The expressiveness of the forms compliments the various ways of decorating the vessels. One of the simplest and forgotten ways was "boiling": a red-hot product which was just taken out from the furnace was lowered into a floury liquid that boiled on its surface and left fantastic patterns of dark spots with stains on its walls. That is how the pots of the master A. Tsarev from the Borovichesky district of the Novgorod region were made.
