Along with the household items, the Vologda lace-makers created many large-scale works in 20th century. One of them is the panel "The Singing Tree" by V. Elfina. The story of the Tree of Life is traditional for the folk art, and this piece looks like a symbol of spring, with the vociferous singing of birds, the awakening of life, the eternal triumph of nature.
The fairy-tale tree is dotted with large flowers. And various birds sit on each of its branches. There are birds with open beaks, long-tailed ones, birds with smart crests and modest ones also. Delicate light background opposes the close-grained pattern of the piece.
The impression of flickering, fairy glow, and the combination of white and stiff flax and silk threads gives the lace an original silver shade.
