“English”, “French” and “Danish” were chintz cloth and kerchiefs with colorful plant patterns on a bright red background, usually manufactured by the Baranovs’ Manufactories Partnership. It could be that these names came from the process of dyeing chintz using “French madder”, a natural dye made from madder root which arrived in Russia from England (Forrer 2010).
