A Valance

The Kargopol County, The Olonets Province. Second half of the 19th century

The images of the snow leopard and predatory eagles form a separate group of the Kargopol embroideries. On the valances and hems of women's shirts they are repeated in rows, alternating in different combinations or placed on the sides of the middle figure or plant motif. Detailed development of the sewing structure with filling the images with small geometrical motifs is the characteristic local mosaic. As in all Russian folk embroidery, one of the popular Kargopol motifs was peahens with lush tails.
