The harsh northern climate put special demands on winter clothing: sheepskins, fur hats and other warm items. It was here that patterned knitted mittens and socks were common. The patterns on these items, so vital in the harsh northern climates, were meant to ward off misfortune and evil.

The knitted black (or brown) and white monochrome patterns are graphic and precise. In Leshukonskoye Village on the Mezen, multi-colored items are knitted in bright, contrasting colors. Patterned knitting is still done in Russia.
