From the 12th century, the symbolic subject of the Coronation of the Virgin was widely spread in the western iconography. According to the patristic tradition, the Coronation of the Virgin took place right after the assumption of the Virgin Mary. Usually, the Coronation of the Virgin accompanies the composition “Assumption of the Virgin”. It was known in the Russian iconography from the end of the 17th century. During the 18th-19th centuries, the subject appeared as its own composition.
