Steel Drawing with Fruit, Flowers and Monica

This still life appears to be at first glance extensive, as if effected by coloured pencils. The contours of the objects are outlined in shining colours, spatiality is only gained by the mutual overlapping of objects and the suggested shadows in the foreground. The influence of French artist Henri Matisse can be distinctly felt in this intentionally very decorative work. Only at a second glance does the observer register that this is not a drawing on paper but actually a work carefully sawn out of sheet- steel.
This steel drawing is one the later works of pop artist Tom Wesselmann. In these works he examines the viewing habits of the observer as well as the highly specific individuality of an industrially produced work of art.
