Portrait of Peter I

After Godfrey Kneller’s original (1698, Kensington Palace). 1859–1862

In 1698 when Peter the Great came to London to meet with King William III, Godfrey Kneller created a ceremonial portrait of the young Russian tsar; in which Peter is depicted wearing a suit of armour against a landscape background featuring ships. Peter’s contemporaries noted that the portrait bore a striking resemblance to the tsar; it also created an allegorical image of a powerful ruler of a seafaring nation. The original painting is housed at Kensington Palace, London; as part of the collection of Queen Elizabeth II. In the middle of the 19th century E. Belli created a copy of the painting for the Romanov Gallery of the Winter Palace at the request of Prince Alexander. Lobanov-Rostovsky.
