State Museum «PAVLOVSK»

1680s, Moscow (?) - After 1741

Portrait of Peter I

Historical collection of the Pavlovsk Palace. 1720 (?)

In the second part of the 19th century the portrait was attributed to Andrei Matveyev; but the accuracy of the attribution generated doubts. Subsequently, Matveyev’s authorship was rejected and a new hypothesis was proposed stating that the painting was actually created by Nikitin in August 1720 in Peterhof, for which the artist used a canvas with a waterscape that he had started beforehand.
