This retrospective medal, commemorating the suppression of the Moscow Streltsy uprising in 1698, was made based on a drawing by Jacob von Staehlin. In 1757 von Staehlin “was ordered to design pieces of art that will illustrate all the major episodes in the history of Peter the Great on medals, or dies.” In 1759 Samuel Judin, who was a medallist at the St Petersburg mint, carved a die based on one of von Staehlin’s drawings.
