Portrait of a Child with a Dog

Mid-18th Century

Eighteenth century portraits were often of children with instruments, animals, fruit and flowers, which had an allegorical meaning. Also significant were the clothes they were wearing, more often than not long dresses regardless of the sex of the child. In this portrait it is probably a girl, since the flowers and the dog are typical attributes of female characters. Play and Passion in Russian Fine Art. St-Petersburg. 1999. P. 20.
