The portrait was painted in Rome and sent to St. Petersburg to the name of the empress Elizabeth Alexeevna as a report. At the same time it was with great success exhibited in the Hermitage. "Young Gardener" indicates a change in the manner of the artist, undoubtedly influenced by the works of the old masters. Kiprensky himself named Raphael among the first of his inspirations. In the picture, however, a romantic mood bordering on sentimentality is present, a plan of secret personal experiences, and characteristic of the European romantics.
