In the summer of 1840 Aivazovsky was sent to Italy to improve himself. In autumn of the same year he arrived in Naples, from where he made trips to the city surroundings and to the islands. Obviously, in addition to searching for spectacular panoramas of the coast of Naples and Salerno bays, the artist wanted to see places featured by the hand of Sylvester Shchedrin, the painter admired by Aivazovsky.
Amalfi is a town in Italy on the shore of the beautiful Gulf of Salerno, to the south of Sorrento
