Hunting Ducks

First half of the 19th century

The attraction of this picture is the "naïve realism" with which the artist depicts a successful hunt. The four hunters in their green clothing, specially intended for the forest, fire their guns, and the four dogs retrieve the ducks from the pond. The ducks fly over the lake in their familiar wedge shaped formation, and those that have fallen from the group with their feet in the air look like the images that used to be found in shooting ranges not so long ago. Play and Passion in Russian Fine Art. St-Petersburg. 1999. P. 286.
