The Old Testament tells the story of the sufferings of Job. Although he loses all his possessions, buries his children and is covered with sores, Job still refuses to condemn God. His friends are dumbfounded when they come to visit him. This scene was depicted by Ilya Repin for an Academy programme. The young artist was awarded a minor gold medal for this work in 1869.
