Despite the fact that during the Soviet period, Grabar also painted portraits and large official canvases, landscape always dominated in his work. His landscapes created in the late 1930s through the 1940s are characterised by the same freshness and optimistic perception of the world as his early paintings in the genre. But at this point Grabar had switched to covering a larger area and to a broad, generalised composition.
