Magic Carpet

1939

  • tempera on canvas. 46 x 79
  • Ж-7069

  • Received in 1960 from the artist’s son George de Roerich (Moscow) by bequest from the artist

Roerich painted the subject of the magic carpet more than once, using the folklore of various peoples. In this picture from 1936 he turned to the legend of King Solomon flying across the expanses of Asia in a wonderful flying apparatus in the form of a magic carpet. According to a tradition that the artist narrated in his book Shambhala (published by World League of Culture in 1932), Solomon would fly to the mountains of Asia to rest from affairs and for prayer.
