The Fire of Victory (Sentinel Flames on Gobi Towers)

1940

  • tempera on canvas. 61 x 122
  • Ж-7086

  • Received in 1960 from the artist’s son George de Roerich (Moscow) by bequest from the artist

An ancient tower, resembling a drinking-cup with a fire, stands in the foreground, with Timur (Tamerlane, 1336–1405) and his horse at its foot. During Tamerlane’s time watchtowers like these were called “Tamerlane’s flowers”. Signal fires from the towers were used to transmit important information, including about the outbreak of war and victories. In The Fire of Victory (1940) a big fire blazes on a watchtower in the darkness and warns of an approaching threat (war against Nazism).
